Apps That Turn Your Daily Steps Into a Virtual Pet

Several iPhone apps turn daily steps into a virtual pet or character, including Wobble, Walkr, Wokamon, Pikmin Bloom, Pokemon GO’s Adventure Sync, Finch and Widgetable. They differ mainly in genre, monetization, and whether they need an account. Wobble is the one built specifically around iPhone Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets.

Information below reflects each app’s public description as of writing. Only the Wobble row is stated from first-hand knowledge; for every other app, Lock Screen widget support is listed as not confirmed rather than guessed. How Each App Works

Wobble: Lazy Pet Pedometer lives in your Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets. It reads steps from the Health app and moves a pet through four body stages, Slim, Normal, Chubby and Blob, based on a 3-day average, with one stage change per day and a little grace built in. Two of the nine characters are free at install; the rest are available as in-app purchases. There’s no account and no server, so steps never leave the phone.

Walkr turns steps into fuel for a small spaceship and, over time, a galaxy you build with other players. It’s one of the older step-to-game apps, built around a slow-burning space exploration loop. It’s freemium, with an account for saving progress.

Wokamon raises a monster that grows as you walk more, leaning into a classic pet-raising structure where steps become experience points that unlock new forms.

Pikmin Bloom, from Niantic and Nintendo, plants flowers along your walking route and grows small Pikmin companions. It uses location in addition to step count and syncs to a Niantic account. It’s free to download with in-app purchases.

Pokemon GO’s Adventure Sync feature tracks steps in the background to hatch eggs and earn walking-based rewards even when the app is closed, layered on top of the main AR catching game. It’s free, with in-app purchases and a Niantic or Pokemon Trainer Club account.

Sweatcoin converts steps into a currency you can redeem for products, discounts or donations. It’s less a pet app and more a step-to-reward marketplace, but it comes up often alongside gamified pedometers.

Finch frames walking and small daily tasks as care for a bird companion, leaning toward mental health and gentle self-care habits rather than a body-shape mechanic.

Widgetable is a widget-first virtual pet and garden app, popular for sharing a Home Screen widget with friends. Growth ties to app engagement and shared activity rather than the Health app’s step count specifically.

Habitica gamifies to-do lists and habits, including walking, as an RPG character you level up by completing tasks. It’s a general habit tracker rather than a pedometer app, so steps are just one possible habit among many.

Account, Privacy and Widgets: What Differs

Most of the apps above ask for an account, because they’re either multiplayer, tied to a franchise login, or sync progress to a server so you don’t lose it on a new phone. That’s a reasonable trade-off if you want friends or a shared world. Wobble takes the opposite approach: it reads steps from HealthKit on the device, keeps state locally, and doesn’t need a server at all.
